Rich Communication Services (RCS) is an advanced messaging protocol designed to enhance traditional SMS functionality. Here are the key technical details:

  1. Objective: RCS aims to replace SMS and MMS messages with a richer, more versatile system.
  2. Features:
    • Rich Content: Allows sending images, videos, and audio.
    • Group Chats: Supports group conversations.
    • Read Receipts: Indicates when a message has been read.
    • End-to-End Encryption: Some implementations (like Google Messages) offer end-to-end encryption.
    • No 160-Character Limit: Unlike SMS, there’s no character limit.
  3. Integration:
    • Part of the broader IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS).
    • Google Messages supports RCS globally.
  4. History:
    • Formed in 2007 as the Rich Communication Suite.
    • Officially announced as RCS in 2008.
    • Universal Profile published by GSMA in 2016 for interconnection between carriers.
  5. Usage:
    • By 2023, there were 800 million active RCS users on Google’s platform.
    • Available from 88 operators in 59 countries.
  6. Encryption Note:
    • End-to-end encryption is not a GSMA-specified feature; it’s implemented by individual messaging clients.
