What is MT Mobile Terminating (call)

By 29th April 2024No Comments

The technical details of Mobile Terminating (MT) in the context of mobile telecommunications:

  1. Definition and Context:
    • In GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) communication, the term Mobile Termination (MT) refers to the termination point for incoming communication on the mobile network.
    • Specifically, MT relates to the receiving end of a mobile communication link, where calls or messages are directed towards a mobile device.
  2. Call Termination:
    • In the context of voice calls, MT involves the process of connecting an incoming call to the intended recipient’s mobile device.
    • This process includes routing the call from the calling party through the mobile network to the destination MT point.
    • When someone calls a mobile subscriber, the network identifies the MT point associated with the called subscriber’s location and connects the call accordingly.
  3. Messaging Termination:
    • For Short Message Service (SMS) and other messaging services, MT refers to the delivery of messages to the recipient’s mobile device.
    • The GSM network ensures that the message is terminated at the correct destination, ensuring successful delivery.
  4. Location Tracking:
    • The significance of MT is also related to tracking the location of the called mobile device.
    • The network uses location information to route the call to the correct serving Mobile Switching Center (MSC) and Base Station (BS) associated with the called subscriber.
  5. Network Handover:
    • During an ongoing call, if a mobile device moves from one cell to another (a process called handover), the MT process ensures a smooth transition of the call.
    • The goal is to maintain communication continuity without interrupting the call.
  6. Billing and Charging:
    • MT is essential for billing and charging purposes.
    • The termination point determines the termination rate, which is the fee charged to the calling party for terminating the call on the called party’s mobile network.
  7. Service Quality:
    • The MT point plays a critical role in ensuring call quality.
    • It involves managing handovers, minimizing delays, and maintaining the integrity of the communication link.
  8. Integration with Other Services:
    • MT is integrated with various services provided by the mobile network, including voice services, messaging services, and data services.
    • Its role is to ensure that incoming communications are correctly delivered to the intended mobile device.

MT is the backbone of mobile communication, facilitating seamless call routing, message delivery, and location-based services.
