The technical details of Mobile Terminated (MT) in the context of telecommunications:

  1. Definition:
    • MT (Mobile Terminated) refers to communication that is initiated by the network and delivered to a mobile device.
    • In simpler terms, MT encompasses messages or calls that are sent to a mobile phone from an external source, such as another mobile phone, a landline, or a computer .
  2. SMS MT (Mobile Terminated):
    • Specifically in the context of Short Message Service (SMS), MT refers to text messages that are sent from a Short Message Service Center (SMSC) to a mobile phone.
    • The term “Mobile Terminated” indicates the direction of the message, which is being terminated or sent to the mobile phone .
    • When an SMS is generated by an external system, application, or platform and directed toward a mobile device, it falls under the category of MT messages .
  3. Comparison with MO (Mobile Originated):
    • MO (Mobile Originated) messages, on the other hand, are sent from a mobile device. Once delivered to the recipient, an MO message becomes an MT message, as it is delivered via the mobile network operator’s infrastructure .
    • In summary, MO represents the start of an SMS message’s journey, while MT represents the end—when the message reaches the recipient’s mobile phone.
