OpenRAN 5G Introduction
The Open RAN 5G is an open source, community-driven project with the goal to accelerate the development of 5G. Open RAN 5G can improve the reliability of your network and provide you with more control over your network while also improving overall network performance. With Open RAN 5G, you get a software-based, virtualized radio access network (v RAN), which allows a number of major benefits. Open RAN 5G is a standard for software-defined RAN, where industry partners can participate. The Open RAN initiative aspires to create a framework of interoperable, open source components and reference implementations through which mobile network operators can build their own customized, open 5G RAN. Open RAN 5G is a flexible, open and scalable open source platform that provides core network functions independent of operator business/technology strategy.

The building block architecture of Open RAN enables operators to create new services by building on top of existing infrastructure. Open RAN is the new 5G protocol developed by Chinese engineers with a goal of unleashing the full potential of 5G networks. The protocol was designed to work with existing 4G infrastructure and allow for seamless migration from one generation to another. Broadly, the Open RAN 5G builds on the Open RAN 4.x standards and extends them to develop a new architecture where the control plane is centralized and the data plane is distributed. The centralization of control plane allows building network-wide strategies such as self-optimized configuration, management of virtual topologies enabling MEC; but also supports site-specific optimizations such as dynamic switching between macro eNB and femto cells. The distributed architecture with MAC mobility enables trans-hierarchical architectures for 5G that aim at significant latency improvements in response time (in order to provide interaction between human and machine). Open RAN is a 5G reference architecture for wireless networks to meet the requirements of open, transparent and interoperable radio access networks. It includes the 3GPP’s Non-Standalone (NSA) and Standalone (SA) modes of operation.

Open RAN 5G will enable cities to connect their first fix to the internet while they start to explore what they want next. The convergence of 4G/5G technologies is more than just deploying new LTE frequencies; it means that operators can provide higher speeds and greater capacity to meet all types of traffic demand – video, IoT and cloud, by introducing a new level of location intelligence. The OpenRAN 5G program provides the global telecommunications industry with an open, royalty-free RAN solution that is easily adaptable to new services, devices and network types. OpenRAN 5G is an open source software framework that provides the industry with a common reference point on which to build new radio system designs, services, and business models. OpenRAN 5G’s current focus areas include partitioning notion, integration and deployment of the latest waveforms and device classification. The project encompasses many partner organizations including Nokia, Intel and operators such as Sprint, Telstra and TMN. OpenRAN 5G aims to simplify access to the 5G RAN, making this technology more accessible by developing an open software stack and contributing standardization efforts to accelerate the development of next-generation RAN. The OpenRAN project is a global initiative focused on developing a trusted open standard for 5G networks. A key part of this vision is creating an interoperable ecosystem that enables the 5G industry to build, sell, and operate their products and services independently of any single vendor in the industry
