Introduction to New Radio V2X communications

New Radio V2X communications can offer drivers many benefits, such as improved safety, reduced congestion and more time with family. The newest versions of New Radio V2X will enable a wider range of applications in cars, trucks, buses and other areas of interest including agriculture and public transportation. New Radio V2X communications enable a new world of safety, mobility and efficiency. With these technologies, vehicles will be able to share data between each other better than ever before. With fewer accidents, better traffic flow, improved road and weather information we will all be safer on our roads. With New Radio V2X, drivers can receive warnings and alerts—such as traffic light failures, amber lights, roadwork zones and school zones—using their vehicles’ built in navigation system and displays. Notifications are specific to their location and travel direction. The New Radio V2X functionality provides a mechanism for exchanging various messages between vehicles and other entities (e.g., road side infrastructure, driver assistance applications). The information exchanged is designed to support cooperative applications such as vehicle-to-vehicle communication and vehicle platooning with or without adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and vehicle platooning with traffic jam assist, intersection movement assist. New Radio V2X (NR V2X) technologies will enable vehicles to communicate with each other and with the world around them, opening up new opportunities for multiple benefits. Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication are two key domains of NR V2X that are being developed separately in order to deliver a comprehensive suite of safety applications. The core goal of both domains is to reduce the number of traffic accidents, injuries, and fatalities that occur on our roads every year by alerting drivers of potential dangers ahead in time for them to take action. Radio V2X communications are the next generation of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. Radio communications between vehicles and road infrastructure enable safe travel through awareness of surrounding vehicles, by providing warnings of potential collisions with those other vehicles, or facilitating automatic braking through detection of pedestrians crossing streets. New radio V2X communications are designed to help drivers, pedestrians and cyclists communicate to improve road safety. They are being developed by the public and private sectors at a global scale, in line with increasingly widespread market demand for these advanced functions. New radio V2X communications are designed to meet the needs of connected vehicles, including the ability to exchange information about the presence, speed and direction of oncoming vehicles.
