Telkomsel, XL Axiata, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and Smartfren are the operators operating in Indonesia. The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology is the regulatory authority for telecommunication in Indonesia. 

  1. Telkomsel

Telkomsel was established on 26 May 1995. Telkomsel Company headquarter is situated in Telkomsel Smart Office, Jl. Jendral Gatot Subroto Kav. 52, Jakarta, Indonesia. Its 65.0% shares are owned by Telkom Indonesia and the rest of 35.0% shares are owned by Singtel. 

The services offered by Telkomsel company are Prepaid, Postpaid, Internet and SMS. The Telkomsel company operates its GSM network on the frequency range of 900–1800 MHz. It operates 3G, 4G, and 5G services on other frequencies. KPN Netherlands and PT Setdco Megacell Asia (Setdco) purchased stakes in Telkomsel of 17.3% and 5% in 1996. Telkomsel was the first wireless carrier in Asia to launched the rechargeable GSM pre-paid services in November 1997. Telkomsel was the first company in the country to introduce a 3G service in September 2006. Telkomsel with the corporation of Apple South Asia Pte. Ltd. introduced the iPhone 3G in Indonesia with customised price plans for all of Telkomsel’s users on 20 March 2009. Telkomsel launched its new logo in June 2021. The website of Telkomsel company was hacked, and unnecessary extra services were shown on the website containing numerous offensive words in April 2017. Telkomsel became the first company to introduce a 5G service in June 2021, with a limited rollout in certain regions in Jakarta and South Tangerang.

The Telkomsel carrier from Indonesia’s Home network identity code is 510 10. This code is made by the joining of Mobile Country Code (MCC) and Mobile Network Code (MNC). The first three numbers showed the MCC and they are utilized to examine the area from which the carried comes. The last numbers of the HNI code show the MNC.

smartfren was established on 2 December 2002. Its headquarter is located in Jl. H. Agus Salim No. 45, Jakarta Pusat, Jakarta, Indonesia. Merza Fachys is the CEO of this company. This company is owned by Sinar Mas Group. 

In Indonesia, Smartfren offers wireless voice and data services. The company was the first in the country to present its LTE-Advanced network in 2015. Smartfren has corporate with China-based smartphone manufacturers for example; Hisense, Haier and ZTE to make advanced devices. These devices work on CDMA 2000 1x or LTE on the newer models. Smartfren has 10.1 million active subscribers in 2018.

  1. Indosat Ooredoo

Indosat Ooredoo was established on 20 November 1967. It was previously known as PT Indonesian Satellite Corporation from 1967 to 1984 and from 1984 to 2003, it was known as PT Indosat Tbk. Indosat Ooredoo was founded by ITT Corporation. Its headquarter is located in Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat No. 21 Jakarta Pusat, Jakarta, Indonesia. Vikram Sinha is the CEO of this company. The 65.6% shares are held by Ooredoo Hutchison Asia and 9.6% shares are owned by the Government of Indonesia. 

According to the Q4 2018 report, Indosat had 58 million users in 2018. It offers international telecommunication administrations utilizing an international satellite. It was the first international company that was acquired and 100% of shares are owned by the Indonesian Government in 1980. Indosat Ooredoo bought Satelindo and SLI by a share majority. They set up PT Indosat Multimedia Mobile (IM3) to offer and provide a nationwide GPRS network. In 2003, Indosat joined Satelindo, IM3, and Bimagraha. Indosat was approved for the license of the 3G network and launched a 3.5G network in Jakarta and Surabaya. Indosat commercially introduced a 4G service at 900 MHz, with a download speed of up to 42 Mbit/s in 2014. Indosat was renamed Indosat Ooredoo in November 2015. Indosat Ooredoo joined with Spotify is Swedish based music streaming administration and become the first operator to offer Spotify music services in Indonesia in 2016.

In January 2021, Indosat Ooredoo decided to close the satellite business. Indosat Ooredoo decided that the latter company would be coperate with Hutchison Asia Telecom Group/Garibaldi Thohir’s joint venture PT Hutchison 3 Indonesia to form Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison in September 2021. But this teamwork was stopped on 4 January 2022. At present, Indosat Ooredoo company provides wireless services for cell phones, and to a lesser extent, broadband internet lines for homes. Indosat Ooredoo is the first operator in Indonesia to conduct OpenRAN field trials.

  1. XL Axiata

XL Axiata company was established on October 6, 1989. Its headquarter is situated in Jakarta, Indonesia. At present, Dian Siswarini is the President and CEO of the company. XL Axiata provides some services such as Telecommunications services. This is owned by Axiata Group.  XL approved the license of the 3G network in 2006, which was introduced in September 2006. XL was the first private mobile services operator in the country to initiate the commercial operations on October 8, 1996. Axiata Group purchased the XL in 2009, which changed the logo of the company. The Axiata company’s tag was added to the XL company’s logo. XL introduced the new logo with the launch of the Real Mobile 4G LTE network service on October 28, 2014. On October 5, 2016, XL again changed its yellow and green logo colour to blue and green, the same as the colour of the first XL logo. XL provides a set of advanced telecommunications services and products ranging from voice, SMS and Value Added Services (VAS) to mobile data. It covers more than 90% of the population throughout Indonesia. It offers the products and services such as cellular mobile network, internet services provider, closed fixed network services, internet telephony service for public interest license, internet interconnection services, and packet-switched local fixed network license.
