In Austria, there are three phone operators: Magenta Telekom, Drei, A1. In Austria, the Regulatory Authority for telecommunication is the Austrian Regulatory Authority for Broadcasting and Telecommunications (RTR).

A1 operator was founded in 1996 as mobilkom Austria, after this in 2010 as A1 Telekom Austria. A1 operator is headquartered in Vienna, Austria. Marcus Grausam is the CEO of A1 company. Services provided by A1 company are Fixed line and mobile telephony, internet, IT services, and IPTV. A1 Telekom Austria provides fixed-mobile convergence to millions of users. At present, A1 Telekom Austria Group has over 24 million users in 8 countries. It has over 17.500 employees. 

In 2000, the company launched the GPRS network. After a few years, in 2003, A1 launched the 3G UMTS, then in 2007, 3G was upgraded to HSDPA and then to HSPA+ in March 2009. In September 2010, it launched 4G LTE. Then again upgraded to DC-HSPA+ in December 2010, LTE-A in 2014, LTE-A Pro in December 2018. In January 2020, it launched 5G NR. A1 Telekom Austria has 5.4 million mobile and 2.3 million fixed-line customers.

  1. Magenta Telekom

In 1996, Magenta Telekom company was established as max.mobil by the O-Call consortium. The company was bought by Deutsche Telekom in 2000. The company max.mobil was renamed T-Mobile Austria in 2002. 

Magenta Telekom provides services to their users in Austria such as Mobile telephony, Wireless broadband, Internet and Cable television services. T-Mobile Austria acquired tele. ring for 1.3billion euros, from Western Wireless Corporation in 2005. On 23 March 2020, the tele.ring branding was discontinued. T-Mobile Austria acquired UPC Austria cable provider from Liberty Global company for 1.9 billion euros in December 2017. On 10 July 2018, the European Commission approved the acquisition. In 2019, the company combined the “T-Mobile” and “UPC” brands under the “T” brand. The new brand name was announced on the evening of 6 May 2019.

Magenta Telekom
  1. Drei

Drei has been operating since May 5, 2003, under the brand 3 Austria. Hutchison Drei Austria GmbH is a telecommunications company. It is located in Vienna. The company was the first mobile carrier to operate in Austria. In 2010, the company operated 2G services on 900 and 1800 MHz, and 3G services on 2100 MHz. It launched a 4G LTE network in 2014 and then it provides LTE-A carrier aggregation on its operating bands B1 (2100 MHz), B3 (1800 MHz), B7 (2600 MHz), and B8 (900 MHz), advertising peak DL data rates of up to 300 Mbps. Drei launched “Pre-5G” Massive MIMO in 2018 in Austria. Drei launched the NB-IoT network in May 2019. The network is understood to work over the operator’s B8 (900 MHz) LTE band. Drei in partnership with ZTE, jointly launched a 5G Innovation Lab as announced in July 2018. The company secured 100 MHz of 5G spectrum in the March 2019 national auction from 3590 to 3690 MHz. Later the company launched commercial services in the city of Linz. The company later enhanced the network to Portschach and Worgl.
